What it scores

The reading grade is the Flesch-Kincaid grade level, worked out here: 0.39 times words per sentence, plus 11.8 times syllables per word, minus 15.59. Syllables are counted from vowel groups, as every automatic readability score does, so treat it as a guide. Merge fields such as {{company}} are left out of word counts; recipient fields count as words about the reader.

The weights are ours, chosen for short first emails to local businesses. They are a writing guide, not a prediction of reply rate.

How it differs from the other checkers

The spam word checker looks at what filters react to: trigger phrases, caps, links and images. The subject line grader scores only the subject. This grader scores the body as a reader meets it: is it short, easy, about them, specific, and does it end on one clear question. It uses the spam word checker's phrase list as one of eight rules.
