Never offer a discount, gift or payment for a review, and never ask only the customers you expect to be happy. Both break Google's rules.
The rules on asking for reviews
Google does not allow businesses to offer incentives, such as payment, discounts or free goods or services, for a review, and does not allow them to discourage negative reviews or selectively ask for positive ones (review gating). Asking customers for honest reviews without an incentive is allowed (Google Maps user contributed content policy).
The FTC's rule on consumer reviews, in effect since 21 October 2024, bans incentives that come with a condition, stated or implied, that the review express a particular sentiment, and bans using threats or intimidation to suppress reviews (FTC: Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, questions and answers). Google's own policy is stricter, so for Google reviews offer nothing at all.
Both read on 8 Nov 2026. This is not legal advice.
Text length
A text in the plain GSM-7 alphabet fits 160 characters in one SMS; longer texts split into 153-character segments. One emoji or curly quote switches the whole text to Unicode, where one SMS holds 70 characters and segments hold 67. Carriers bill each segment, so the counts above show where a text splits.

Questions
Text them soon after the job with a short thank-you and your direct review link, and send one polite follow-up by email if they have not left one. Ask every customer, not just the happy ones.
