"In use" means the name has nameserver records, so it is registered. "No DNS records found" means the lookup returned none; the name may still be registered without DNS, held by a registry or premium-priced. Only a registrar can tell you whether you can buy it.
How the ideas are made
Words like LLC and Inc are dropped from the name. The ideas are the name on its own in each extension you tick, then the name with the trade, the city or the state added, and the city with the trade. Hyphenated forms are offered only for names of three or more words. Each idea is looked up in DNS for nameserver records within one 4-second budget; nothing is registered, reserved or stored.
What makes a good local business domain
- Short and easy to say on the phone: under 15 characters before the dot is a good aim.
- A .com if you can get it; people type it by habit.
- The trade or city in the name helps people remember what the business does and where.
- No hyphens or digits unless the name already has them.

Questions
No. It shows whether a name has DNS records. A name with records is in use. A name with none may be available, but only a registrar can confirm it.
A .com is easiest for customers, who type it by habit. If the .com is taken, adding the city or trade to the name often keeps you on .com.
Usually not. Hyphens are easy to forget when the name is said aloud. They can help a long name of three or more words read clearly.
