Google review statistics by trade: ratings and review counts for US local businesses

As of 5 Nov 2026, the median Google rating across 127,697 rated US local businesses in the 67Leads warehouse is 4.9 stars, 42% of rated listings show a perfect 5.0, and the median business has 37 reviews. Ratings cluster near the top, so review count, not rating, is what separates most businesses.

What we measured

These figures cover the local businesses in the 67Leads warehouse: businesses in the trades we carry, collected from public business listings and company websites, graded as the trade, with a phone number, and with opted-out businesses removed. For each one we hold the rating and review count shown on its public listing when we last collected it.

Two rules shape the numbers:

This is a count of the listings we hold, not a survey and not a census. The figures are computed when this page is served, so they move as we collect more. The same numbers, with a CSV, are in our Google ratings data study.

Ratings: most businesses look excellent

Here is how ratings are distributed across every rated business we hold:

Google ratingListingsShare of rated
Under 3.01,3921%
3.0 to 3.94,6654%
4.0 to 4.49,9538%
4.5 to 4.957,56645%
5.054,12142%

The middle half of rated businesses sit between 4.7 and 5.0 stars. Compare any single rating with that range before calling it good or bad: a score that sounds respectable on its own can sit below most of the businesses around it.

That has two practical consequences:

  1. A 4.5 is not a selling point by itself. If you are a business owner, your rating mostly needs to not be low. If you sell to owners, "you have a great rating" is not news to them.
  2. Low ratings are rare and visible. Only 608 businesses, under 1% of the total, are under 4 stars with 50 or more reviews. Those businesses stand out on the map, in the wrong way.

How many perfect 5.0 ratings rest on few reviews

A perfect 5.0 is common: 54,180 businesses in our data show one. But 19,813 of them, 37%, have 9 reviews or fewer. A handful of reviews from early customers is enough for a perfect score, and a single unhappy customer is enough to end it, so a perfect score on a small count carries little information.

So read 5.0 together with the review count. A 4.8 with 200 reviews says more about a business than a 5.0 with four.

Review counts: the real spread

Review counts vary far more than ratings. The median business has 37 reviews. Here is the spread of review counts across all 134,345 businesses:

That spread is why review count works so well as a segment for anyone selling to local businesses.

By trade

Ratings and review counts differ by trade. A trade where customers call once a decade leaves fewer reviews than one they use every month.

Trades with fewer than 50 businesses behind a figure are left out of both tables, so no row describes a handful of businesses. Each trade's own page, such as the tree service statistics, has the state-by-state view.

Reading rating and review count together

Because ratings bunch near the top, a rating on its own sorts businesses poorly. The pair is what tells you something. Four combinations come up again and again, and each suggests a different conversation:

RatingReviewsWhat it usually meansA useful first line
HighManyEstablished, well liked, probably busyTalk about capacity, hiring or the next location
HighFewGood work, little demand captureTalk about asking every happy customer for a review
LowManyBusy, with a visible reputation problemTalk about responding to reviews and fixing the cause
LowFewEarly, struggling, or bothUsually the hardest sale; qualify before you pitch

"High" and "low" here mean against the trade's own median, from the table above, not against every business. A tree service and a dental office live in different review economies, and comparing across them misleads.

Counts also age differently from ratings. A review count mostly rises over time, so a business with many reviews has usually been trading long enough to collect them. A rating can move either way. When you quote either number to an owner, quote it as of the day you looked, and look again on the day you send.
