Methodology and sample size
- Businesses: Google Maps listings with a phone number, graded as on-trade, with opted-out businesses removed (98,511 rows across 50 states and 6,579 cities).
- Rated: listings with a Google rating of 1.0 or more (93,227 of 98,511). A listing with no rating yet is unrated, not a zero. Rating bands are shares of the rated listings; ratings are stored to one decimal.
- Middle half: the 25th to 75th percentile rating.
- Review bands are shares of the 98,511 businesses; a listing with no review count counts as 0.
- Ratings are as Google showed them when the listing was last scraped. A map listing's rating is not an audit of the business.
- Sample rule: a row is shown only when the figure it is a share of has at least 50 businesses behind it; 0 smaller cuts are left out.
- Percentages are rounded to the nearest whole percent; "under 1%" means at least one business but less than half a percent.
