Methodology and sample size
- Businesses: Google Maps listings with a phone number, graded as on-trade, with opted-out businesses removed (98,511 rows across 50 states and 6,579 cities).
- With email: an address read from the company's own website (36,254).
- Verified, risky, invalid, not confirmed are shares of the businesses with an email. Verified: the mail server confirmed the mailbox over SMTP; nothing is sent. Risky: a catch-all server accepts any address, so the mailbox can be neither confirmed nor ruled out. Invalid: the server refused it. Not confirmed: the probe could not decide, or has not run yet. (7,090 verified, 7,394 risky, 729 invalid, 21,105 not confirmed.)
- Personal-looking: the share of addresses that are not a shared inbox such as info@ or office@. It says nothing about who reads the mailbox.
- Sample rule: a row is shown only when the figure it is a share of has at least 50 businesses behind it; 0 smaller cuts are left out.
- Percentages are rounded to the nearest whole percent; "under 1%" means at least one business but less than half a percent.
