Which email provider does a domain use?

Paste up to 10 domains or email addresses. We read each domain's MX records live and name the provider: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho, a security filter or a free mailbox. Free, no account.

How it works

For each domain we make one live DNS query for its MX records, the servers that receive its email, within one 8-second budget for the whole list, and name the provider from the server names: Google Workspace (google.com), Microsoft 365 (mail.protection.outlook.com), Zoho, GoDaddy, Proofpoint and so on. Addresses at gmail.com, yahoo.com and other consumer mailboxes are named without a lookup. Names are checked before any query; private and reserved names are refused. Nothing is stored.

A security filter such as Proofpoint or Mimecast sits in front of the real mailbox, so the provider behind it is not visible in DNS.

Questions

How do I find out which email provider a company uses?

Look up the MX records of its domain: they name the servers that receive its mail. Paste the domain above; Google Workspace shows as google.com servers and Microsoft 365 as mail.protection.outlook.com.

Why does the email provider matter for cold email?

It tells you which spam filter your email will meet. Gmail and Outlook filter differently, so many senders track results by recipient provider.

What does no MX record mean?

The domain does not advertise a mail server, so an address there is unlikely to receive email. Check the address before you send to it.

What share of local businesses use Gmail?

Of the 43,277 US local businesses 67Leads lists with an email, 15,271 (35%) use a free or ISP mailbox rather than their own domain: gmail.com 11,963, yahoo.com 1,456, aol.com 306, hotmail.com 297, outlook.com 289, icloud.com 202.
