Selling to insulation contractors: how to find them and reach the owner

To sell to insulation contractors, first make sure your list is actually insulation contractors. The trade is hard to count: Census folds it in with drywall, suppliers show up in every search for it, and many roofing, HVAC and general contractors list insulation as a sideline. In our data 4,245 sellable businesses are graded as insulation contractors, and another 416 found in insulation searches are kept but flagged as adjacent trades, so you can decide whether to include them.

How many insulation contractors are there?

There is no clean government count. Census County Business Patterns puts insulation under NAICS 238310, Drywall and Insulation Contractors, and counts 20,760 employer establishments under that code for 2023, about 87% of them with fewer than 20 employees (US Census Bureau, County Business Patterns). Because that code includes drywall hangers and finishers, it overstates insulation on its own. It also misses insulation crews that sit inside roofing or HVAC companies, which Census counts under those trades.

So any "number of insulation companies" figure is an estimate. The useful question for a seller is narrower: how many businesses in your territory sell insulation installation as their main service, and how many offer it alongside something else.

Search a map for "insulation contractor" or "spray foam insulation" in any city and you get a mix:

  1. Specialist installers. Spray foam, blown-in and batt insulation is their business. These are the core of an insulation list.
  2. Contractors in neighbouring trades who also insulate: roofers, HVAC companies, general contractors, waterproofing and duct-cleaning firms. Some do a lot of insulation work; for others it is one line on a services page.
  3. Suppliers. Building-materials yards and insulation distributors. They sell the product, not the installation, and are the wrong buyer for almost every offer aimed at contractors.

Our grading sorts each listing into one of those groups. Listings in the first group are core. The second group is kept and flagged as adjacent: 416 insulation-search listings (8%). The third is withheld: 622 listings (13%) were graded as suppliers or other off-trade businesses and are never sold as insulation contractors. Our study of off-trade listings by trade shows how that compares with other trades.

Whether you want the adjacent group depends on your offer. A spray-foam rig financing company wants specialists. An insurance agent may be happy to write any contractor that insulates.

Insulation is a long-tail trade

In our data the sellable insulation contractors are spread across 1,397 cities in 42 states, and many are based outside the largest metros, serving a region from one yard. A list built only from the biggest cities misses them. If your territory is a state, search the state rather than its two or three biggest cities.

The same spread changes how you write. A contractor in a small town may be the only specialist for miles around, and that is worth acknowledging. Mention the area they serve, not just the town on the listing.

How to reach an insulation owner

Email the verified, named addresses

315 insulation contractors in our data have an email the mail server confirmed, and 96% of those are not shared inboxes. Use the owner's name where the site gives one; 268 insulation contractors name an owner. Our guide to finding owner names covers where else to look.

Catch-all addresses, 60% of the insulation emails we could test, cannot be confirmed by the mail server. Send them in small test batches. Our guide to verifying a lead list explains why.

Call the specialists, mail the long tail

Insulation crews are on site most of the day, often in an attic. Call early, leave a short voicemail, and follow up by email. For rural contractors with no website, a letter to the business address may be the best way in. Do not text mobiles without consent: autodialed texts to mobile numbers need prior express consent under federal law (47 USC 227).

Say something specific

Openers that work are about the business, not about insulation in general:

Check the list before you send

Because insulation searches pull in so many neighbouring trades, it is worth five minutes with the list before you send:

  1. Sort by category and read the adjacent rows. Remove any that do not fit your offer.
  2. Look for duplicates with your roofing or HVAC lists, by phone number. The same owner should not get three emails.
  3. Check that no supplier slipped through under a contractor category.
  4. Send the verified group first.

Questions

How many insulation contractors are in the US?

There is no exact count. Census counts 20,760 employer establishments under NAICS 238310 for 2023, but that code includes drywall contractors, and it misses insulation work done by roofing and HVAC companies.

Why does my insulation list include roofers and HVAC companies?

Because they turn up when you search for insulation and many of them do insulation work. We keep them, flagged as adjacent, so you can include or exclude them. Suppliers are withheld entirely.

What is the best way to reach an insulation contractor?

A verified email to the owner by name, followed by a phone call early in the day. Our guide to cold email reply rates for local businesses covers what response to expect.
