Selling to dentists: how to find dental practices and reach the owner-dentist

To sell to dentists, sell to the owner-dentist and plan for the front desk: the US Census Bureau counts 135,665 offices of dentists with paid employees (NAICS 621210, 2023), and about 95% have fewer than 20 employees, so the person who signs is usually a dentist who owns the practice. Use a published email where the mail server confirms it, write as if an office manager reads it first, and call when the front desk is not busy checking patients in.

The 67Leads warehouse currently holds 11,669 sellable dental practices. Each listing is graded against the trade before it can be sold: general, cosmetic and pediatric dentists, orthodontists, endodontists, periodontists, oral surgeons and emergency dental services count as dentists, while dental laboratories, dental supply stores and dental schools are left out. That is a count of what we have collected so far, not a census. The dentist lead list and the dentist statistics page carry the live counts by state and city.

Who sells to dentists

Dental is one of the niches agencies name most often. Several agency-niche rankings call dental one of the most profitable niches to serve (Phantom Leads), though that comes from vendor blogs and should be read as direction, not proof. The main groups:

Each wants a different cut. The selling to dentists use case has the filters for each buyer.

The Apollo problem with dentists

Person databases are built around LinkedIn profiles and company domains, which is a poor fit for a three-chair practice. One cold emailer described searching "dentists in Phoenix" on Apollo and getting "dental software companies, corporate chains with LI pages, a handful of actual local offices" (r/coldemail). The independent practice, which is most of the market in the Census size data above, is the one those tools miss.

A list built from public business listings and company websites starts from the office itself. The trade-off is that the contact details are the practice's, not a named person's, unless the practice's own site names the dentist who owns it.

Getting past the front desk inbox

The line that matters most for dentists is the shared-inbox share. A dental office's published email is often the address the front desk uses to confirm appointments and receive forms. That inbox gets read, but by someone screening for patients, not for vendors. A cold emailer in another trade put the problem plainly: "I'm cold emailing pest control businesses and kept hitting info@ and contact@ addresses" (r/coldemail). The same thing happens in dental, with an extra layer of patient traffic.

Three ways to handle it:

The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) is a public federal file that lists an "Authorized Official" name and title for healthcare organisations that hold an NPI (CMS NPPES files). At a small practice that person is often the owner-dentist or the practice manager. It is a free place to check who signs before you write.

What dentists will and will not want to hear

Dentists are paid for chair time, so the strongest pitches talk about filled appointments, fewer no-shows, or more of a specific high-value treatment. Two cautions:

Phone and mail

Call the practice line away from the start of the day, when the front desk is checking patients in, and ask the front desk who handles marketing or vendor decisions. Leave a short message with a reason to call back. Texting practice numbers carries the same federal rules as any other business: autodialed texts to a mobile need prior express consent, and damages are $500 to $1,500 per text (47 USC 227). Mail addressed to the dentist by name is slow but reaches the person who signs.

Email is the lower-risk channel, but it has rules too. The FTC says CAN-SPAM "makes no exception for business-to-business email": include a postal address, an opt-out, and an honest subject line (FTC). Read whether buying an email list is legal before your first send.

Three dental lists worth building

  1. Reputation list. Practices under 4 stars with 50 or more reviews, for review and reputation agencies. That is 207 practices today.
  2. Owner list. Practices with an owner name and a verified email, for anyone selling a decision a dentist makes alone. That is 0 today.
  3. Web list. Practices with no website (702) or a listed site that did not load (123), for web designers and booking tools. The dentists without a website page tracks the first group.

Start with one metro, pull every practice, and split it into those three groups before you write a word. Check the list first: our guide on how to verify a lead list explains what "verified" means here and what it does not.

Questions

How many dentists are in the US?

The US Census Bureau counts 135,665 offices of dentists with paid employees (NAICS 621210, 2023 County Business Patterns), plus about 54,452 dental businesses with no employees in the 2023 Nonemployer Statistics.

Who is the decision maker at a dental practice?

At an independent practice it is usually the owner-dentist, with an office manager screening calls and email. A practice that belongs to a group may buy through the group, so ask before you pitch a local office.
