What is Free-mail address?
A free-mail address is an email at a consumer mailbox provider such as Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, iCloud, AOL or an internet provider's mail service, rather than at the business's own domain.
Also called: freemail, consumer mailbox.
Many small businesses run on a free mailbox: the owner set one up before the business had a website, or the website was built without email hosting. A roofer whose site lists a Gmail address is often giving you the owner's own inbox.
For a sender this changes two things. First, verification behaves differently: large consumer providers answer mailbox checks on their own terms, and the result should be read as the verifier reports it, not assumed valid. Second, a free-mail address says nothing about the business's own domain, so a tool that finds emails by guessing patterns at the company domain will miss it entirely.
Free-mail addresses are also why a business email list is not the same as a list of company domains. Two businesses can share no domain at all and still both be reachable, and one person can run several businesses from one inbox.
The State of Local Business Websites 2026 report counts the share of published emails at free providers, by trade.
In our data: Of the businesses in the 67Leads warehouse that publish an email on their own site, 35% (15,299 of 43,256) use a free mailbox provider rather than their own domain.
