What is Toll-free number?
A toll-free number is a US phone number with an 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 or 833 prefix, where the business pays for incoming calls instead of the caller.
Also called: 800 number.
Toll-free numbers are common on franchise and call-centre listings and less common for small independent businesses, which usually list a local number. That makes the prefix a quiet signal about who answers: a toll-free line often reaches a central dispatcher rather than the owner.
They also behave differently for outreach. A toll-free number cannot be assumed to receive text messages the way a mobile number might, and texting any business number raises the consent questions covered under the TCPA. For cold calling, a local number is more likely to reach a decision-maker directly, which is also where the Do Not Call questions arise.
When you clean a list, normalise numbers to one format (E.164, +1 followed by ten digits, is the safest for software) so duplicates and toll-free prefixes are easy to spot. The phone number formatter does that in bulk and flags toll-free numbers.
67Leads marks toll-free numbers on every row and separates them from local numbers in search.
